Canadian Confederation

Assignment:
1. Combine the technology of today with the events of yesterday. Work in groups of two. Find where your family lived at the time of Confederation. If none of your family members were in Canada at the time, pair with someone whose family was, and work as a team. Alternatively, pick a famous figure of the time, such as Joseph Howe or Charles Tupper and represent him. Imagine that the government of the day has asked your ancestor’s opinion as a “focus group” about your colony entering Confederation. They will meet by satellite teleconferencing. Tell what you think of the benefits or drawbacks of Confederation based upon these considerations (if they apply): your occupation, the economy of the colonies, trade, threat of invasion, religion, the concerns of First Nations people, and government. Do any of these concerns apply today?
